Why Are Sports Fans So Crazy?

With the World Cup going on in Brazil, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about not the game itself, but why are sports fans so loyal and dedicated to their favorite teams?  And if you haven’t seen just how crazy people go just after one goal, then you don’t know what I mean just yet.  But there are actually legitimate and scientific reasons why sport fans are as crazy as they are.

Can We Enhance Our Body With Genetics?

Technology has gone pretty far in our world, especially when it comes to medical advancements.  Because of new technology, life expectancy has dramatically increased over the past hundreds of years.  But have you even wondered if we can manually alter our genes? What if the billions and billions of letters of DNA in our bodies could be changed? In turn it would make is stronger, faster, smarter, and more powerful, like Master Chief like in the popular video game series Halo.

Death To Pennies

What was your first memory of a penny?  What ever it may be, it is likely that you have remembered pennies being around since you were born.  Well the story of the beloved currency starts in 1792 in the US in the first American mint.  At that time the pennies could actually buy things and were useful.  Well times have changed and it’s time the penny says it’s goodbye to the world, however the US still clings to the penny to this very day.  It’s time for a change, death to pennies.

Winning, Talent, and Training

As famously said by Greg Anderson, “Focus on the Journey not the destination.  Joy is found not finishing an activity, but doing it.”  This quote can be incorporated just about anywhere.  Our lives, stories, and so on and so on.  However, in my English Class, we just finished watching the movie “Rocky” and so I will talk about how the two are related.  And since we are on the topic of sports, what would get you better results, Talent or Training?  Is there some sort of gene that makes you more athletic than others.

The Best Study Tips

Okay, starting next week is the beginning of AP testing in my school. You know what that means, stress, procrastination, and of course, cramming two weeks before the test. Luckily, this is only my first year taking the AP test, and I only have one, but nevertheless, just thinking about the AP test makes me nervous. So obviously, studying is the best way to do well on tests, but are there any other factors that we can control? What does science have to say about productivity and the best ways to stay concentrated? Continue reading

Failure Is Only The First Step (Innovation Project Update)

We all have been in the face of failure and defeat and we never like it. And yes, we have always been told things like “Never give up, never surrender,” or something along those lines. But what makes people successful, innovative, and resilient? How can you recover from failure? I’ll talk about my own experiences, but first lets see how successful people see failure.

Can You Disappear From Earth?

During these days, whether you like it or not, we are constantly being monitored and tracked.  Don’t believe me?  In Minneapolis, a father walked into a Target Store demanding Target to apologize.  His high school daughter had been mailed coupons to baby appliances, and was therefore suggesting for his daughter to get pregnant.  After they apologized, the father realized that his daughter was indeed pregnant.  But how did Target know this?  As it turns out, Target had been tracking the products she had recently been buying, and the algorithms pointed to the fact that she was pregnant, and so she was mailed the coupons.  Okay, that isn’t even the begging of ways to monitor and track people down.  We have mobile phones with built in GPS, debit card information, and much more.  Despite all this, around 2000 people in the US disappear completely.  How is this possible? Lets find out.

Time Flies…..

17-1385778267_700x0Right before I entered high school, I was always told “High School goes by so quickly, so don’t waste your time, and do things while you can.”  In fact, it seems like everyone says that now a days.  However, this ins’t just some old proverb.  There is an actual mathematical explanation on why time seems to fly by so quickly the older we get.

Now there is a relatively simple explanation for this phenomenon.  Think of it this way; after your turned 1 years old, 1 year represents your entire life.  When you turn 2 years old, 1 year represents half of your life.  Finally, when you turn 17, 1 year represents 1/17th of your life.  See the pattern?  As you get older, 1 year represents less and less of your life, and eventually, time just seems to “fly by”.  This could explain why our childhood seemed to take so long to complete, and when we reach high school and beyond, things go by quickly.

Don’t get Mad, Get Even

AngerWhen a cartoon character gets angry, steams comes out the ears, red creeps over the body from head to toe and there may even be an explosion or two. It’s not as entertaining to watch in real life, but the state of anger causes physical effects in us as well. The response varies from person to person, but some symptoms include teeth grinding, fists clenching, flushing, paling, prickly sensations, numbness, sweating, muscle tensions and temperature changes.  Continue reading

How to Spot a Liar

We all don’t like it when we are lied to.  Even if our friends are lying to us to spare our feelings, we would rather they just be honest with us, even if the truth hurts.  We also don’t like it when those around us and those who think we trust , are deceitful and are really working for their own purposes.  It is hard to imagine living life where everyone is shady around you, and just trying to carry out their own ambitions and care for no one else.
