Addiction: Why Drugs are Hard to Forget

Throughout your life, there has been once in your life that you have been told by your friends, teachers, or parents, to NEVER EVER think about taking drugs. Well, you will hear it from here too. This is not going to be a post on why drugs are bad, but this is going to explain why it is hard for those who area taking drugs to forget about them.

If you ever wondered what is in the mind of a drug user, let’s say…a smoker for this instance, he/she will always think about smoking as the next thing on their to-do list. For example, I recently heard my uncle say this a few days ago at a dinner celebration, ” It feels good to smoke again, I didn’t have a chance to smoke the whole day.” And when asked if he wants to eat anything, he said, ” I’ll eat later, right now smoking is more important.” This shows how addicting smoking and drugs in general, can be. It will take over your life and make it a priority.

But why does addiction to drugs occur? Well, it is all based around your brain. Addictive drugs causes neurons in your brain to release a chemical called dopamine. Now that the brain is used to it, the system in your body is now tolerant to it. Dopamine receptors begin to shut down and release less and less each time, which results in having to take the drug more times in order to achieve the same pleasure that you had the first time. In my uncle’s case not only did the chemical dopamine play a role in my uncle’s addicting to smoking, but because of the chemical called nicotine that is in the cigarette. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical which not only well… gets you addicted, but it also takes your appetite away, creates mood swings, more saliva, and effects your body in other ways. This is why drugs become addicting so fast and last so long.

In the book, “A Tale of Two Cities”, by Charles Dickens, I was able to draw a comparison from drugs to Dr. Manette and his addiction to making shoes. Dr. Manette was a prisoner, and during his time in prison, he had nothing else better to do than to make shoes. This was his way of reaching “pleasure”. Just like drugs, which are usually used by people who want to feel good about themselves. And after his release years later, he still can’t stop making shoes. Like drugs, it has become addicting to him and he can’t live without it.

Please Listen: No matter how old you are, NEVER take drugs! There is no coming back once you have, and you will regret doing so.
